European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
